Emerging Technology 4: Online Gaming

I choose to explore the Professor Garfield website (http://www.professorgarfield. org/pgf_home.html) for my 4th Emerging Technology assignment as a way to explore a new online gaming opportunity for my students. There are a variety of activities that could be used for computer reward time, indoor recess, computer lab time, as well as reading and math oyo (on your own) activities during stations. Some of the things I like about this website are that it is very engaging. There are colors, sounds, and music with each click of the mouse. When I was on the website there were not any pop-ups or advertisements on the margins which can be distracting to students. One problem I could see is that if students are not guided toward specific activities and are left to free choice, the amount of efficient academic working time could be sacrificed. The best section I found which I plan to use during reading stations was called "Transport to Reading" on the home page. Orson's Farm offers phonemic activities with letter sounds and blends. Garfield's Island has online storybooks that give students the option to have the books read to them. Students can also create their own characters. I am glad to have this new resource to add to my list of websites for students to visit!
